Chapter Leadership

The Southern California chapter of HIMSS is comprised of a dedicated group of IT professionals from different segments of healthcare. The Executive Committee consists of the elected Board Officers. The Board of Directors consists of the Executive Committee along with board committee chairs.

Sam King, President
Sam King has senior executive, consulting, and teaching experience in healthcare finance, healthcare IT, project management, analytics, business intelligence, data warehousing, data management and analysis, financial planning and analysis, and continuous quality improvement.  He is a faculty at the Paul Merage School of Business at UC Irvine, and the UCLA Jonathan and Karin Fielding School of Public Health. Sam is a Vice Chairman of the HIMSS National Chapters Task Force, serves on HIMSS Davies Committee on the use of Health IT and electronic health records, and is an Advisory Board member for the Healthcare IT Summit.  He also serves on the board of directors of the Southern California chapter of the Healthcare Financial Management Association, where he chairs the certification committee and the student mentoring/scholarship committee.  At UC Irvine's Paul Merage School of Business Sam has been a charter and Advisory Board member of the Dean’s Leadership Circle, and has chaired its various committees.
Sam holds a master's degree in public health from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and a second master's degree in business administration from the University of California, Irvine. He is a Fellow of HIMSS (FHIMSS), a Fellow of HFMA (FHFMA), a Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ), a Certified Professional in Healthcare Information Management Systems (CPHIMS), and a Certified Healthcare Finance Professional (CHFP).




Angela Rivera, Immediate Past President
Angela Rivera has over 18 years of experience servicing the healthcare industry. Since July 2000, Ms. Rivera has been employed by CTG HealthCare Solutions where she is currently the Southwest Region Client Partner responsible for business development and client relationships. In this role, Ms. Rivera develops and maintains strong and effective relationships with current and potential key and strategic clients in pursuit of CTGHS’ healthcare consulting solutions including: Strategic, Clinical, Financial and Advanced Technology services. Prior to joining CTG, Ms. Rivera was West Region Account Director for Healtheon/WebMD where her focus was supporting hospitals and medical groups with physician deployment efforts of Information Technology. Ms. Rivera also served as Manager of Corporate Communications with responsibility for Investor Relations, Public/Media Relations, Marketing and Advertising for a publicly traded national physician practice management organization. Residing in San Diego, California, Ms. Rivera is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and Healthcare Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS).





Despina Hopkins, President-elect
With over 20 years experience in healthcare leadership, Despina Hopkins, RNC-OB, MBA l Manager Inpatient Systems Cedars-Sinai Medical Center | Enterprise Information Services has comprehensive knowledge of healthcare management, hospital operations, healthcare informatics and healthcare information technology including clinical and business systems project management, implementation and support. She is the Enterprise Regional Manager of Applications for Adventist Health in Roseville, California, Ms. Hopkins is responsible for the applications of 4 hospitals in the Southern California Region. She manages the Regional Business Application Support Analyst Team, Integration/Interface Team, and the Clinical Team that provide 2nd level implementation and support of the hospital business and clinical systems. Prior to joining Adventist Health, Ms. Hopkins was the Information Systems Director for Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, a 435 bed hospital in Hollywood, CA. Despina is a member of HIMSS Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society and she serves as a Board Member of the HIMSS Southern California Chapter. She also holds an RNC registered nurse certification for Inpatient Labor and Delivery through the National Certification Corporation.





Clark Kegley, Administration/Secretary
Clark Kegley works at Scripps Health as the Senior Director of Service Delivery in Information Services. He has been with Scripps for more than 13 years and prior to that was a technology consultant working on large scale implementations and interface development within Healthcare.
Over the years he has held positions such as Chief Information Officer (interim) and Director of IS Operations as well as owned his own consulting firm specializing in healthcare interfaces between clinical systems including selling a healthcare interfacing toolset commercially. Clark also serves as the Vice President, Administration on the Southern California Chapter of HIMSS board.
He holds advanced degrees in Economics & Computer Systems. He is a Fellow of the Advisory Board Company, Healthcare Executives Track, ITIL certified and a certified Remedy Administrator & Developer.
Clark has been married for over 28 years to Leslie and has two grown Sons, Joshua and Daniel. His passion is spending time with his family on the Colorado River where they boat & SeaDoo in the summer and dune buggy, quad and motorcycle ride in the winter along with their dogs Rio & Harley.




Steve Edison, Vice President, Finance
Steve Edison is a Regional Partner at Encore Health Resources, who has been involved with HIMSS both nationally and at the chapter level for over twenty years. He has served as Chapter President (three times in NoCal), other board positions (Treasurer, Advisor, Program Chair), and has been involved with the National Chapters Task Force for the past ten years. Steve is involved in the National HIMSS Scholarship efforts, and has been part of Peer Review for the National program for many years. Steve has been part of the health care industry for over thirty years as CIO, vendor and management consultant. He currently works with healthcare organizations West of the Mississippi, leading a team of business development executives in that region.





James Brady, PhD, Vice President, Programs
James is the Chief Security Officer and Chief Technology Officer at Hawaii Health Systems Corporation in Honolulu, Hawai’i, the state's fifth largest employer and the nation's fourth largest community hospital system with more than 1,270 beds, 4,000 employees, and 14 facilities.  He has earned 18 technical and professional certifications, and has been featured in news articles, and industry and academic conferences. James is the HIMSS Mobile Security Workgroup Chair, HIMSS SoCal Chapter VP of Programs, and serves on three Hawai’i HIE and telemedicine committees. He is married with three children, has competed professionally in tennis and inline speed skating, and lives in Honolulu.





Sriram Bharadwaj, Vice President, Advocacy
Sriram Bharadwaj (Sri), has over 20 years of Information Management Systems experience in multiple industries including healthcare. He is currently Associate Vice President, IT, Molina Healthcare and has expertise in Applications Development, Enterprise-wide IT Infrastructure and Operations. Sri has been an integral part of the healthcare payer community having been a senior IT leader in PacifiCare (now United Health Group) and Molina Healthcare focusing on implementing solutions to meet core regulatory requirements such as HIPAA and Sarbanes Oxley. Sri has exposure to both the payer and provider environments since Molina Healthcare operates healthplans, acts as Medicaid fiscal agents and operates clinics across the nation. Sri is well known for his process knowledge delivering performance improvements in multiple industries during his long tenure with Deloitte in various parts of the Americas, Asia Pacific and EMEA region. Sri also has expertise building products for customers through his earlier involvement with SAP AG (an ERP vendor). Sri is a Chartered Global Management Accountant (FCGMA)(U.K), Professional, Academy of Healthcare Management (PAHM), a Six Sigma BlackBelt (ASQ) and a CISSP. Sri is a Committee member for the CIO Healthcare Summits and has delivered many presentations on Healthcare regulations and compliance at various conferences.





Dean Torres, Chair, Membership Committee
Dean has been actively involved with the Southern CA HIMSS Chapter and Board of Directors for the last four years. During his day job, Dean works with Teradata healthcare clients and prospect companies to provide business insight into the value and use of data warehouse-driven information. He currently helps customers enhance their advanced analytics and business intelligence capabilities using Teradata. With 15 years of healthcare operations experience, Dean focused on the provider and payer side of the business.
Before Teradata, Dean worked at PacifiCare Health System. His team worked with providers and hospitals to resolve contractual and financial issues, as well as resolve claims, customer service, and appeals/ grievance issues. He also worked at Kaiser Permanente, where he managed staff and hospital departments, identified best practices, re-engineered processes work flows, and coordinated hardware and software implementations. Lastly, Dean worked at Georgetown University Medical Center (hospital administration) and Scripps Health (manage care contracting).
Dean received his Masters Degree in Health Services Administration from The George Washington University in Washington, DC. He completed an Administrative Residency at Georgetown University Medical Center and received his Bachelors of Science Degree in Biology at San Diego State University.





Anette Asher, Chair, Marketing/Communications Committee
Anette Asher joined the Life Science Information Technology (LSIT) Global Institute in September 2005 as CEO and Member of the Board of Directors. In December 2010 LSIT merged with the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) where she was acting Director of Life Sciences Information Systems through the completion of the merger. Anette is Chairman of the Board of the Sharp HealthCare Foundation and is on the board of directors of the Sharp HealthCare System, a $2.3B non-profit hospital system. In June 2011 Anette was recognized as one of 20 “Women Who Rock” by the San Diego Metro. She has served on several corporate boards of private companies and continues her dedication in serving the community.




Chris Zepeda, Chair, Academic Alliance Committee
Chris Zepeda obtained a Bachelors of Science in Biology at Loyola Marymount University and an Executive Masters in Health Administration from the University of Southern California. After working six years in the healthcare industry assisting emergency medicine physicians with their documentation and accurate charge capture, he decided to improve his knowledge of coding and physician documentation by learning various vendor electronic health record systems. His knowledge improved in the area of evidence based medicine after doing an internship with ZynxHealth. Currently, Chris is completing an internship with the CMO/CMIO at the St. Joseph Health System. Working in the Clinical Excellence Department, he developed skills through the successful strategic implementation of an EHR at four of their current ministries (hospitals), giving them the ability to meet their goals of having the capability to meet Stage 1 Meaningful Use for FY11. His current interests are strategic planning and implementation in the field of clinical informatics and plans to use his previous knowledge with physician documentation and coding by assisting in the implementation of ICD-10.





Don Boatright, Chair, Sponsorship Committee
Don has held several senior management and IT consulting positions they include; Vice President for a healthcare technology consulting firm, Branch Manager for @Tech, Technical Division for Apple One , and as Director of Recruitment and Director of Human Resources at MC Informatics. Don's long record of success in the healthcare technology sector is the result of his depth of sales, recruitment and staffing ability. He has worked with respected firms such as NCR, Bank of America, EDP, SMS ,and the Thor Group. His specialty is the delivery of skilled and experienced personnel to fulfill clients human resource needs.
