Welcome to the Southern California Chapter of HIMSS Academic Alliance Committee Internship page!!

In 2010, the Academic Alliance Committee identified over 175 internship opportunities from approximately 85 Southern California-based healthcare organizations. In additional, over 190 students and 22 universities and community colleges received internship information and guidance from SoCal HIMSS in 2010, with the result being many SoCal HIMSS members qualifying for and being awarded an internship opportunity.

SoCal HIMSS is happy to announce several internship initiatives available for chapter members.

Internship Assistance for Individuals

The chapter is committed to helping all of its members in identifying and obtaining internship opportunities. Whether you are a student looking for real world experience, an unemployed professional looking to get back into the workforce, or a working professional desiring a career change, an internship opportunity in one of Southern California's healthcare IT settings may be just what you need. Internships vary in length, compensation, and location, but offer tremendous value and experience.

Internship Assistance for Organizations

SoCal HIMSS is actively engaged with many local healthcare organizations in advising and assisting in the development of internship opportunities. If your organization is interested in creating internship positions but needs additional guidance in the development of these positions or help finding qualified internship candidates, SoCal HIMSS can assist.  If your hospital has an existing internship program, SoCal HIMSS can be resource for potential interns.

Internship Assistance for Universities and Community Colleges

The Academic Alliance Committee has partnered with many of Southern California's universities and community colleges in identifying and augmenting student internship and preceptor needs. SoCal HIMSS serves in an advisory capacity for many educational institutions, particularly in regards to the Health IT Workforce initiative.  If your university or college needs assistance wiih finding additional preceptors or identifying organizations that are able host student internships, SoCal HIMSS can help.

HCC-CHWA-SoCalHIMSS Partnership

SoCal HIMSS is proud to announce a recent partnership with the Health Career Connection (HCC) and the California Healthcare Workforce Alliance (CHWA).  This partnership will greatly improve opportunities for individual SoCal HIMSS members to identify and obtain internship opportunities.  The alliance will also provide additional assistance for organizations that are looking to develop internships.

The purpose of this partnership is designed to augment the existing SoCal HIMSS Internship Program in the following three ways: (1) Help build the HIT workforce needed to achieve meaningful use of electronic health records and other emerging technology tools; (2) Expand opportunities for students, incumbent workers and others interested in HIT to obtain internships, jobs and build a network to advance their HIT careers; and (3) Connect health organizations to qualified, well trained workers to advance their HIT initiatives.

Internship Testimonies from 2010

“SoCal HIMSS has been playing a strong role in making students  realize their dreams of finding the best Internship  opportunities.”
- Naga Anuradha, PhD Candidate, UCLA School of Public Health

“SoCal HIMSS is the No. 1 organization for helping students with internships.  I can personally say that as an international student, SoCal HIMSS can provide a lot of help. Since we have little knowledge of companies doing the hiring, the internship program is very useful to us.  After the first health care IT conference I was lacking confidence in myself in being able to obtain an internship.  The AAC internship committee has given me opportunities to prove myself along with many others students in the same field.  SoCal HIMSS has been a GREAT source for finding internships. Thank you SoCal HIMSS for helping students through the internship program.”
- Sandip Patel, MHA student, CSU Long Beach

“I wanted to reiterate my appreciation for all your help in my search for an internship over the past several months. Thank you for your constant updates and keeping me in mind whenever potential opportunities arose.”
- Raj Sharma, MHA Candidate ’11, Cornell University, Sloan Program Master in Health Administration

“I just wanted to take a moment and thank you.  You are doing an amazing job coordinating internship opportunities and staying on top of them.  I want you to know that your effort is appreciated.”
- Peter Gastaldi,  President, Catalyst Interactive USA, Inc

“I could not get these two interviews without your help. Thanks very much for your great help on my job-hunting! It's much easier to get interviews from you.  A thousand thanks! Take care!”
- Shawn Gong, Industrial Liaison & Alumni Relations Chair, Viterbi Graduate Student Association, Viterbi Engineering Senator, Graduate and Professional Student Senate, University of Southern California
