Advocacy Day Brief
The 2nd Annual HIMSS California Chapters Advocacy Day took place in Sacramento on May 12th, 2009. The event was held at the Hyatt Regency across from the State Capitol. The room was filled with over 90 Southern & Northern California HIMSS members which almost double the attendance from the previous year.
Keynote speakers were Herb Shultz, Senior Advisor to the Governor, and Jonah Fhrolich, Deputy Secretary of Health Information Technology, California Health & Human Services. This dynamic duo presented an incredible amount of information regarding the Stimulus bill and engaged the crowd on a 45 minute question and answer session that culminated with a quick break to visit our event sponsors. Both speakers solicited input from the crowd in an unprecedented manner, including request for participation on a stakeholders call.
Following the break we had our own Dave Roberts presenting information on HIMSS Legislative Principles now known as the HIMSS Government Initiatives. Last but not least our chapter advocacy advisor Angela Taylor, held a stellar training session for the group. At the end of the education session all members were ready to meet our legislative representatives and carry the message to the Capitol.
“The Ask” – HIMSS continues to be informed as the ARRA bills is interpreted – We are dedicated to being your source of information and keeping you and your office informed.
The day followed by an exquisite Southern lunch and a walk to the State Capitol where HIMSS members met with 64 legislators. Leave behind HIMSS folders were also distributed to a total of 120 offices. At the end of the day all members enjoyed the opportunity to debrief and network with other members. This was a very exciting time for all of us since this proved to be one of the most successful advocacy days for both chapters. Presentation from the program are available

This will take you directly to the draft letter, where you will have the opportunity to craft a personalized message. There is the opportunity to send letters to both your Congress person and both your Senators.
